2008 Trek Discovery Channel Road Bike

In 2008, the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team rode Trek road bikes. The team’s main sponsor was the U.S. cable television network Discovery Channel, and so the team was often referred to as “Team Disco”. The team’s other sponsors included Shimano, Oakley, and Nike.

The team’s most notable rider was Lance Armstrong, who joined the team in 1998. Other riders on the team included George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer, Pavel Padrnos, Yaroslav Popovych, Jose Azevedo, Viatcheslav Ekimov, Dimitri Konyshev, Guennadi Mikhailov, Benjamin Noval Gonzalez, Manuel Beltran Martinez,, Santiago Botero Echeverry,, Andrey Kashechkin,, Alberto Contador Velasco,, Haimar Zubeldia Aguirre,, Chris Horner,, Jens Voigt,. The team was founded in 1991 by Jim Ochowicz with 7-Eleven as its first primary sponsor.

The team had great success early on with riders such as Andrew Hampsten and Maurizio Fondriest winning stages in the Tour de France and one-day classics like Milan–San Remo and Liege–Bastogne–Liege. In 1995 however things took a turn for the worse when financial problems forced 7-Eleven to pull out of sponsoring just before the Tour de France which they had been leading with Lance Armstrong wearing the yellow jersey. From 1996 until 1998 Udo Bölts led a number of riders to success including winning two Olympic gold medals (1996) but it wasn’t enough to save his job when Jim Ochowicz decided that he needed someone more high profile for 1999 season onwards.

[1] Bjarne Riis took over as director sportif from 1996 until March 12th 2007 when he resigned due to accusations that he used illegal performance-enhancing drugs during his 1996 Tour de France victory.[2][3] Johan Bruyneel then took over directing duties until he too was asked to step down because of involvement in doping while directing at Astana and subsequently RadioShack.[4]

Luca Guercilena is now general manager after being appointed following Johan Bruyneel’s departure.
