In her early twenties, Sister Maria Helena left her home in Brazil to become a Catholic nun in Europe. She never imagined that she would one day be riding a bicycle across the continent on a spiritual pilgrimage. But that’s exactly what she’s doing.
For the past two years, Sister Maria Helena has been pedaling her way from country to country, spreading the word of God and promoting world peace. Her journey has not been easy, but it has been rewarding. Along the way, she has met many interesting people and seen some amazing sights.
She has also gained a deep understanding of the human condition and our common humanity.
A nun on a bicycle is not something you see every day. But that’s exactly what Sister Madonna Buder did when she competed in the Ironman triathlon at the age of 82. She is the oldest woman to ever complete the grueling race, which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon run.
Sister Madonna first took up running at the age of 48, after she saw a group of nuns running in Washington D.C.’s Rock Creek Park. She was inspired to give it a try herself, and she soon found herself hooked on the sport. In 1986, she completed her first marathon, and she has since gone on to compete in more than 325 races, including 45 Ironman triathlons.
What’s even more amazing is that Sister Madonna didn’t start competing in triathlons until she was 55 years old. Since then, she has completed an astounding 30 Ironman races, including 13 in one year (she holds the world record for most Ironman finishes by a woman over the age of 80). In an interview with The Huffington Post, Sister Madonna said “I just love life too much… I want to live every minute.”
And that’s exactly what she’s doing – living life to the fullest and inspiring others to do the same.
How Did the Nun Get on the Bicycle
The nun in question is Sister Maria Celeste, and the story goes that she was given a bicycle by her father when she was just eight years old. She loved it so much that she rode it everywhere, even taking it with her when she entered the convent. The other sisters soon began to tease her about her “unholy” mode of transportation, but she didn’t care.
To her, the bike was a gift from God and He had obviously meant for her to use it. As the years went by, Sister Maria Celeste continued to ride her bike whenever she could. One day, when she was out riding near the convent, a group of young men started to follow her and make lewd comments.
She pedaled as fast as she could to get away from them, but they were quickly gaining on her. Just as they were about to catch up to her, Sister Maria Celeste heard a voice telling her to “get on the bicycle.” Without thinking any further, she leapt onto the bike and pedal away as fast as she could.
The men chased after her, but they couldn’t keep up with her supernatural speed and eventually gave up. Sister Maria Celeste never told anyone about what happened that day, but the story quickly spread throughout the small town where the convent was located. Some people said that it was a miracle; others said that Satan had possessed the poor nun and given her unnatural strength.
No one knew for sure what had happened, but everyone agreed that it was something truly miraculous… or demonic.
